Empowering Organics: Harvest Power's Perspective

A webinar was presented on Tuesday, December 4, by EIA's FILA for NSWMA and WASTEC members. The session included Q&A.

The recording of the 59-minute session may be downloaded (MPEG 3 file [7.1 Mb, audio only], MPEG 4 file [498 Mb, audio/video]). Other related resources include: presentation (PDF file [3.3 Mb]).

SUBJECT: Organics diversion and anaerobic digestion (AD) have gained recent attention as businesses, cities, and states pursue aggressive sustainability agendas.  Private waste generators are demanding “organics recycling” while state and local policymakers promote renewable energy production from AD.  This changing landscape has already begun transforming the solid waste logistics and processing business. The speakers addressed topics such as:

  • The role of anaerobic digestion in sustainable management of organics
  • How haulers are dealing with SSO (source separated organics)  today – pros, cons and problems to be solved
  • On-site digestion: opportunity or threat to the hauler?
  • Emerging policy trends

PRESENTORS: Paul Sellew, Wayne Davis, and Chris Balfe of Harvest Power sketched out the evolving organics landscape. Harvest is a leader in the organics processing industry today.  In addition to being one of the largest processors of organics in North America, Harvest is currently completing construction of two anaerobic digestion facilities in Canada, and has begun construction of a third in Florida.

Product Stewardship: Theory & Facts...Will It Increase Recycling?

A webinar was presented on Wednesday, March 14 by EIA's FILA for NSWMA and WASTEC members. The session included almost 30 minutes for Q&A.

The recording of the 83-minute session may be downloaded (MPEG 3 file [10 Mb, audio only], MPEG 4 file [39 Mb, audio/video]). Other related resources include: Scott Cassel's presentation (PDF file [3.3 Mb]), Chaz Miller's presentation (PDF file [168 Kb]), EIA's Product Stewardship Policy (PDF file [77 Kb]), and PSI's EPR Principles paper (PDF file [282 Kb]).

SUBJECT: Product stewardship – the idea that manufacturers should be “responsible” for the end-of-life management of their products – aims to increase recycling while also establishing a new way to fund recycling programs. Thirty-two states currently have product stewardship laws, most of which cover mercury-containing and electronics products.

PRESENTORS: In this program, Chaz Miller of NSWMA and Scott Cassel of the Product Stewardship Institute discussed the results of current laws and their impact on the recycling industry.

Happy Employees=Happy Customers: The Emerging Science of Happy Organizations

The webinar was presented on February 9 by EIA's FILA for NSWMA and WASTEC members. The session included time for Q&A.

The recording of the session may be downloaded (MPEG 3 file [7.6 Mb, audio only], WAV file [30.4 Mb, audio only], MPEG 4 file [28.5 Mb, audio/video]).

Areas discussed included: Is there a link between employee happiness and customer happiness? Absolutely! Happy people are more productive, more engaged, and more satisfied with their jobs. Studies show that they select higher goals, perform better and persist longer on problem solving tasks. In fact, the current issue of the Harvard Business Review says that happy employees are on average 31% more productive; their sales are 37% higher and their creativity is three times higher. It’s time for businesses to become emotionally intelligent and learn to create the positive emotions customers crave. This program is a great start!

PRESENTOR: JoAnna Brandi is a consultant, a public speaker, the author of two books on customer loyalty, and serves a diverse group of clients in a number of different capacities, in large companies and small alike. In her workshops and keynotes she motivates entire organizations to get passionate about customers and raise their “Positivity Ratios” at the same time. She uses email, telephone classes and video to keep her inspiring message and practical how-to’s in the forefront of minds of the leaders and customer facing employees. She specializes in creating more positive, strengths based workplaces where employees are motivated and customers are happy and loyal.
